Qualifying ‘key’ says VAR’s Fittipaldi

As FIA Formula 2 returns to action, Van Amersfoort Racing’s Enzo Fittipaldi is relishing the chance to race on one of motorsports most historic layouts.

The Imola circuit in Italy has a long and storied history but is arguably most notable for being the venue of Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna’s final F1 race in 1994.

Fellow Brazilian Fitipaldi is targeting his second win of 2024 having scored his first Feature Race win in Saudi Arabia earlier this season.

The 22-year-old is sixth in the Drivers’ Standings after failing to score points last time out in Australia.

He says a successful weekend in Italy is down to performing well over a single lap.

He said: “The key is to have a good Qualifying [on Friday afternoon]. That should hopefully lead to a lot of points and a good race.”

Imola ‘one of the greatest tracks’

“Its a fun track to race at,” Fittipaldi said ahead of the Round 4 weekend.

He said the number of high-speed corners provides drivers with a challenge they embrace.

He’s pinpointed the pair of right-hand corners in the middle of the track, Acque Minerali, as a section where drivers must be ‘perfect’.

The following chicane, the Variante Alta, can also be make or break for a lap.

“You have to use the perfect amount of kerb at the chicane, which makes it tricky to nail and easy to make mistakes,” he said.

The Brazilian says Turn 1, the Tamburello chicane, is the best place to make an overtake, which will be with the aid of DRS (Drag Reduction System).

“Maybe Turn 7 (Tosa) and up to Turn 9 (Piratella) if you get a good exit [from Tosa],” he said.
