Rafa Câmara closes gap on Tsolov, insists ‘the fight is still open’

After closing out the Monza weekend with a solid second-place finish, Rafa Câmara spoke about the race just after crossing the finish line. The Brazilian driver talked about the start, his attempt to close in on Joshua Dürksen in the closing laps, and the team’s momentum in the title fight.

“The start obviously was not an ideal one, but it was okay, getting to P2. And from there on it was just trying to hold the position. Obviously I was hoping for no Safety Cars at the beginning, because for me and Joshua, after the Safety Car window, it would be a problem for one of us.

“But until then it was quite okay. We were able to have a clean race, and then I think we lost a bit of time getting stuck with other cars. But overall I think it was a very good race, very solid after yesterday as well, being a bit unlucky. I think it was good to score some good points today.

“And obviously very happy for Joshua and the team that we were able to do a P1, P2 today.”

Asked whether he was able to try a move on Dürksen in the final laps as he closed the gap, Câmara admitted he was pushing for the win until the end.

“Yeah, I was really trying to get closer, at least to try a move. Obviously I wanted to win as well, but I think Joshua today did a very good job. He had a very good pace and was just very, very close.

“So a huge congrats for him, and we keep pushing. I think we’ve been doing good steps, I think, every race. The whole team, we’re stronger, and it’s just good to keep this momentum for Madrid.”

On the title fight, with just 11 points separating him from championship leader Nikola Tsolov, the Brazilian kept the focus on his own performance. “I think on that side, like I said before, it’s just really focus on my side, trying to get things to maximize what I can do, and take the points.

“I think we did very well today. Like I said yesterday, it was a bit unlucky, but it’s just keeping this momentum. I think the last, I don’t know, five rounds, we’ve always been there, always consistent. So it’s just to keep doing our job, and for sure the fight is still open. And we try, we keep pushing to the end now. So never, never give up.”
