Sargeant to Join Williams F1 Team Depending on Super License Outcome

Sargeant optimistic to take the win from third

Williams’ Team Principal Jost Capito confirmed that Logan Sargeant will drive for the team in 2023, should he achieve the required super license points.

After his Formula 1 debut in Free Practice 1 in Texas last month, Capito was full of praise for the young American who has had an impressive rookie season so far in Formula 2. He is currently third in the standings, he would need to finish fifth in order to receive the 40 super license points needed to compete in the top series. He currently has 28 in total.

Capito spoke to Sky Sports following the announcement: “We feel he’s ready to race and under the condition that he has enough super license points after Abu Dhabi he will be our second driver next year.”

Williams have also admitted that they don’t have an obvious replacement if he cannot achieve enough points.

This weekend the 2022 Formula 2 season comes to an end in Abu Dhabi. As it stands, his closest rivals are Jack Doohan, Jehan Daruvala and Enzo Fittipaldi who are all currently tied fourth in the championship standings, nine points behind Sargeant.

Although he has had a great debut season, recent rounds haven’t matched the pace he showed in the summer.  His last win and podium came at the Red Bull Ring in July where he showed great pace throughout the wet Feature Race. However, Sargeant has been frustrated with the results from the final few races where he has had one race retirement each of the last five rounds.

At the moment he is the highest placed rookie in the standings with a total of 135 and despite the pressure, he seems confident going into this weekend:

“The goal going into Abu Dhabi is to make sure I get my Super Licence. Sitting third in the Championship, I don’t want to finish any lower than that. It’s one round to go, we’re in a great position, we’ve been fast all year. I think the chips are on the table and it’s time to go for it. There should be no holding back, one last one round shootout and I’m going to give it everything. It’s going to be maximum attack.”

This weekend’s F2 results will have a huge impact on the 2023 F1 grid and Sargeant will be hoping to have a change of luck. We will be posting updates on our social media about how the championship standings are looking throughout the final weekend of Formula 2 this year.
