The Trident Motorsport team found relative success in Round 8 during the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at the Red Bull Ring, acquiring 3 points via a 6th place finish from Richard Verschoor.
After a disappointing Round 7 from the Trident team, which saw neither driver gain any points in either the Sprint Race or Feature Race, they have been able to get themselves back into scoring position this weekend in Austria.
After an 8th place qualifying position for Verschoor, the reversed grid left him in 3rd place at the beginning of the Sprint Race, but after hitting the kerb at Turn 1 and being pushed wide at Turn 3, Verschoor lost ground, leaving him in P6 after Lap 1.
The other driver for Trident Motorsport, Calan Williams, started in 15th place and ended in 14th after hanging around the middle of the field with Amaury Cordeel, Roy Nissany, and Roberto Merhi.
Trident Team Manager Giacomo Ricci had mixed feelings about the result, stating: “We welcome the three points gained by Richard Verschoor, which allow us to move up the standings again.
“However, we expected something more from today’s heat, as the Dutch driver was starting from third place on the grid.”
Ricci also expressed the importance of the strategy for tomorrow’s Feature Race. He said: “Very little overtaking was seen in today’s race,
with positions literally crystallizing after the first few laps.
“We will have to make good use of the strategies in tomorrow’s race to leave the Red Bull Ring with a good result.”
Trident Motorsport heads into the Feature Race 9th in the Team Standings, only two points behind DAMS. With Verschoor scoring only once in the previous six rounds (10 points at the Azerbaijan Feature Race), a scoring return is a bright spot for the Trident team and bodes well for tomorrow’s race.
