Bulgaria’s Nikola Tsolov took a record-breaking third Formula 2 victory in a row as he won the British Grand Prix Feature Race to complete an F2 double after winning Saturday’s Sprint Race. 

It’s the Campos Racing drivers sixth win of the season, one more win and he will be equal with Charles Leclerc and George Russell with the most wins in one season of Formula 2.

Tsolov’s latest victory gives him a 17-point lead at the top of the championship standings, moving clear of MP Motorsport’s Gabriele Mini, while Rafael Camara and Alex Dunne are almost 50 points back.

After his win on Saturday, Tsolov shot a championship warning to his rivals, saying he’s still improving race-by-race and that there is more to come from him.

It’s the eighth win of the year for Campos, as the Spanish team continued its most successful season in F2.

He was joined by Rafael Villagómez of VAR in second place, who has taken three podium positions in three rounds this year. His alternative tyre strategy, starting on hard tyres, was proven to be successful this time around at the Silverstone circuit.

ART’s Kush Maini finished in third position after starting in the same place, but consistently fighting hard with the race leader until the final moments of the weekend. This is his second podium this season.

Tsolov unbeatable for second day running

Invicta Racing’s Rafael Câmara started from pole position, sharing the front row with Rodin Motorsport’s Alex Dunne. ART Grand Prix’s Maini and surprise qualifying result, Roman Bilinski from DAMS Lucas Oil lined up behind them.

Martinius Stenshorne stopped around Turn 9 before the formation lap and never made it to his grid box for the start after what appeared to be a major technical issue. This would be his sixth race with no points added to his championship campaign.

Maini immediately took control at the front of the pack as Câmara slipped backwards into P3. Tsolov also had a great start from P5 as he slotted in P2, with Dunne in P4. However Câmara and Dunne switched before Stowe corner, as instructed by his engineer over the radio.

Maini and Tsolov continued to fight for the lead of the race. ART Grand Prix’s driver managed to build a gap to the Campos Racing driver and continued to achieve the fastest lap. Bilinski immediately started pushing again to retrieve his position from Inthraphuvasak which he completed on Lap 9.

On Lap 16, Sebastián Montoya became the first driver to veer off track by Maggotts but managed to keep the car going without causing a disruption to other drivers and pulled into the pits. It was revealed to be a broken rear suspension issue which he believed had been caused by Mari Boya on Lap 2 and retired the car for the third race in a row.

Nine laps remained with Maini and Tsolov still keeping their elbows out at each other. The Bulgarian finally managed to switch these positions around Maggotts and Becketts, both with a set of hard tyres that they would have to keep until the end of the race.

By Lap 26, Tsolov overtook Oliver Goethe who was still yet to pit but Maini had to focus behind him as he struggled to keep ahead of Villagómez, who eventually past him on new soft tyres. Unlike his Van Amersfoort Racing teammate, Nico Varrone sustained some front wing damage as his car caught the back tyre of Inthraphuvasak, leaving him in 13th position.

Boya who sat in P15 received a late five second penalty after speeding in the pit lane which but remained in this position with the time added.

A range of tyre strategies for the windy circuit

A range of drivers started with soft and hard tyres, with Rafael Villagómez leading the group of hard tyres in sixth position and Joshua Dürksen close behind in seventh. Many other drivers like Boya, John Bennett and Cian Shields remained towards the back of the grid.

Although in the long run, the hard tyre seemed to be the better choice as Câmara complained about the pace over the radio, along with Maini, Tsolov and Dunne who requested to box by Lap 6.

Around half of the grid pitted at the same time, with most exiting in the same order that they had entered. Without the use of tyre warmers in Formula 2, it is up to the driver to warm the tyres as quickly as possible to make their way up the field.

Gabriele Minì was the first driver in the hard tyre pack to pit during Lap 15 and slotted in before Cian Shields. The Italian was able to quickly make his way back up behind Dürksen and Villagómez.

Villagómez remained competitive until the last few laps of the race without a pit stop. He was 11 seconds in front of Noel León in second place who was also still yet to pit by Lap 24 of the race.

The Van Amersfoort Racing driver managed to exit the pit lane just in front of Dunne but was quickly overtaken by him and Câmara, leaving him in seventh position but managing to pull back in front of both drivers, Maini and others during Lap 26 and 27 once his tyres were warmed. This is what enabled him to climb back to second position.

Tyre strategy is extremely important at a circuit like this where the track conditions are constantly changing, and this was proven today.

Formula 2 will continue in two weeks’ time for the Belgian Grand Prix from the 17th of July to the 19th of July at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.
