During the recent FIA Formula 2 virtual meeting, Richard Verschoor of MP Motorsport offered an honest and reflective look at his progression in the series, his unexpected longevity in the championship, and the new opportunities emerging in his career, most notably his involvement with McLaren.

Verschoor began by expressing enthusiasm about being in Formula 2, noting how valuable the experience already feels. He shared that he is “excited to work with McLaren and to learn with the team,” emphasizing that integrating into such a well-established program is a significant step in his development as a professional driver.

One of the key moments in the conference came when he was asked, “Do you have any plans outside of F2?” Verschoor admitted that remaining in the category for five seasons was not something he ever expected. He explained that although the length of his Formula 2 career surprised him, the time has been instrumental in shaping him. He reflected on the value of the experience, stating that he has appreciated “learning how to become a professional” and gaining repeated chances to refine his craft. Verschoor added that the extended journey has taught him to recognize exactly what he needs to continue working on as he grows as a driver.

The discussion then turned to his new relationship with McLaren, prompted by the question, “How did you get the opportunity to work with McLaren?” Verschoor revealed that the opportunity came from initiative and timing. Following the race weekend in Jeddah, he approached McLaren CEO Zak Brown personally. That conversation, he explained, opened the door for him to begin working with the team.

He acknowledged that he wished he had received support from a junior program earlier in his career, suggesting that such backing could have helped accelerate his development. Nonetheless, Verschoor made clear that he is grateful for the moment he has now and intends to make the most of it.

As the press conference concluded, Verschoor reaffirmed his satisfaction with his performance up to this point, describing himself as “overall happy” with where he stands. With the experience of five seasons, a renewed sense of direction, and the guidance of McLaren, he appears poised for the next phase of his career, wherever that path may lead.
