Trident Motorsport wrapped the 2022 FIA Formula 2 season with a seventh-place finish in Sunday’s Feature Race at Yas Marina, a result Team Manager Giacomo Ricci called “positive”.
Richard Verschoor, 21, collected his 14th points finish of the campaign, scoring in all of the last nine races, while F2 debutant Zane Maloney finished the Feature Race in 16th.
“We achieved another positive result to wrap up the season after yesterday’s second place,” said Ricci, who added: “The balance reflects an uprising season for Trident Motorsport.”
Trident started Dutchman Verschoor on the harder tyre and chose to run until Lap 23, making up six places after leaving the pit lane to pick up the seventh-position finish.
Explaining this strategy, Ricci said: “We decided to make Verschoor start on Prime tyres to allow him to fight in the final stages, and the strategy worked.”
Debutant Maloney enjoyed a solid weekend, collecting 15th in Saturday’s Sprint Race before the 16th place in Sunday’s Feature, which Ricci described as “flawless”.
The Barbadian driver finished as runner-up to Victor Martins in F3 this season racing for Trident, where the 19-year-old won the last three Feature Races of the season.
Trident finish the 2022 season ninth in the F2 Teams’ Championship, as they did in 2021, but this season saw the Italian team score 108-points compared to last year’s 35-points.
