Victor Martins Aiming For Victory in F2 Season Opener

Frenchman Victor Martins says he’s hoping to get his 2024 FIA Formula 2 campaign off to a winning start in Bahrain.

Martins, 22, returns to the series after finishing fifth in the driver’ standings last season and remains with Championship winners ART Grand Prix.

The 2022 FIA Formula 3 champion is aiming to emulate former team mate Théo Pourchaire in winning the opening round and going on to become F2 champion.

“I hope to win straight away,” Martins said, adding “[I want] to be at the front, quick and fighting for pole position and wins.”

Martins is tipped to be among the front-runners to be crowned 2024 FIA Formula 2 champion.

In his rookie season, Martins scored one victory at Silverstone and nine other podiums.

Eyes on starting at the front

Martins took three pole positions in 2023, the first at the Jeddah Corniche circuit in Saudi Arabia, which hosts Round 2 of the 2024 season next weekend.

And he’s got his eyes on setting the pace in Bahrain on Thursday: “The goal is to be fighting for pole in Qualifying.”

Pole position offers two championship points in Formula 2.

Martins stressed the importance of getting the tyres ‘in the window’ during the preparation lap, saying: “getting the warm-up right is crucial.

“Then it’s about being on the limit, without being over [it], and delivering the lap.”

Failing to qualify on pole position isn’t a disaster in Bahrain, with three DRS (Drag Reduction System) zones, where a flap in the rear-wing can be opened to increase speed, offering chances to pass the opposition.

But tyre degradation is high in Bahrain, a combination of the desert heat and the roughness of the track.

Qualifying is on Thursday, followed by the Sprint Race on Friday and the Feature Race, which offers 25-points to the winner, is on Saturday.
