Victor Martins “Wanted more from starting P2” in Jeddah F2 Feature Race

After finishing third in the Feature Race, Martins admitted he felt it went “quite difficult at some points” therefore ultimately happy with the outcome of his race.

Starting P2, Martins dropped down a position to claim the final podium spot of the race behind Jak Crawford in P2 with Arvid Lindblad taking the win, the youngest ever F2 driver to do so.

Martins admitted in his post race interview that he was “targeting the win” however with how the race went it was “quite difficult to think about winning”.

After taking a gamble staying out on track after debris was strewn across the track by Van Amersfoort’s John Bennett, Martins emerged from the pit lane in P9, finally ahead of Crawford, holding the virtual lead of the race.

Pitting a lap later meant Martins struggled to keep Crawford behind, weaving around the track desperately trying to heat tyres before – to his advantage – a virtual safety car was released keeping Crawford at bay for 4 laps before he utilised his DRS and overtook Martins after an intense battle.

Martins touched on his lengthy battle with Crawford, racing side by side for four corners before Martins kept the lead for the remainder of the lap however finally having to let Crawford flying past on the start finish straight. Martins acknowledged that after he was outbreaking him in the first few corners, Crawford managed to bring some speed and overtake him.

Martins admitted ” after he got in front of me again, after that I was trying to get close but not too close as I think he was struggling in sector one quite a lot and it was just a waiting race”.

He also went onto reveal that he was “a bit upset” with his team when he realised had “no opportunity for the win anymore” as Verschoor took a good lead and said he would have “maybe pushed a bit more ” had his team of realised how far Verschoor was leading by, however did state that with the pace Verschoor had, he would have beaten him at some point anyway.

The teams and drivers will now be preparing for the next race weekend in Imola on the 16th – 18th of May.
