As defending team champions in FIA Formula 2, expectations were high for Invicta Racing heading into the 2025 season.
Although the team currently sit in fifth place ahead of Silverstone weekend, Team Principal and CEO James Robinson remains composed and confident. In an exclusive interview with InsideF2 writer Aaron Harper, Robinson gives a candid and insightful update on Invicta’s progress – a campaign marked by competitive consistency rather than commanding dominance.
While fans may feel that Invicta hasn’t hit the same heights as 2024, Robinson quickly points to the numbers as a sign of their underlying strength:
“I’d actually like to make the point that we’ve actually scored more points this season than we had this time last year.”
He credits the team’s performance to a stable driver line-up and the unpredictable nature of F2.
“We’ve gone into this year with a similar sort of driver line-up to what we had last year, defending F3 champion and a seasoned driver with showing great speed in the past. And so I would say this year hasn’t actually been too different at this stage of the season to the last.”
Robinson admits the team isn’t quite where they want to be yet, but is optimistic about their positioning and ability to rise in the championship table.
“We obviously would like to be a little bit higher in the championship, but we’re in the mix. And, you know, this is a really, really competitive championship.
“Obviously, in a spec formula like F2, the margins are incredibly tight. And so to be up in the top four in both championships is something that we’re relatively satisfied with. You know, we’d like to get a race win, but ultimately it’s all about doing our job and making sure we get points at every single weekend.”
Much of the spotlight has been on the 2024 F3 champion, Leo Fornaroli. Despite the fact that he hadn’t won a single-seater race since 2021 before Saturday’s Sprint Race, the team principal firmly backs up his talent.
When asked about Fornaroli’s approach and the efforts made behind the scenes, Robinson’s praise of the 20 year old is made clear:
“Really, really impressed. He’s brought a great sense, a great work ethic. He works brilliant with the team. He’s a real, real team player. Works really well with the engineers. And he’s also just a really, really lovely guy.”
The working relationship between Fornaroli and his team mate Roman Stanek has also become a strength of the team.
“[He] works really well Roman as well. They know each other, of course, from racing at Trident together. They help each other out. The team dynamic has been excellent and he’s been a massive part of that.”
That harmony within the garage is something that Robinson values, stating that, “the true drivers are really the fundamental driver of that team dynamic”.
With Invicta Racing sitting in the top half of both championships and steadily accumulating points, Robinson’s message is evident: sticking to the process and focusing on the details will follow with results.
