Joining Freddie Slater in being confirmed Formula 2 drivers for the 2027 season, Trident Motorsport have announced 20-year old James Wharton as their first driver for next year.
Taking two victories and a further podium across his two-year F3 stint with ART Grand Prix and Prema respectively, Wharton went on to finish 18th in 2025 with 25 points, and 17th in 2026 with 39.
Despite 2027 being the Australian’s first full season in the series, he actually made his Formula 2 debut last year with Trident in Qatar, following Sami Meguetounif and Max Esterson’s early departure from the Italian outfit.
Struggling to adapt to new machinery, he unfortunately retired during the Sprint Race and finished a grueling 19th in the Feature Race.
Now committing to a full season in the fast-paced 22-car series, Wharton is “looking forward to joining the team and continuing to work hard with them over the winter, so that we can arrive in 2027 in the best possible shape.”
Likewise, Trident has high hopes for the future, “confident that the work we will do together will enable him to take a significant step forward.”
Wharton is set to make his Formula 2 return in post-season testing in Abu Dhabi, though as of yet nothing is confirmed.
