Williams F1 Junior Colapinto Wins his First Formula 2 Race in Imola

Franco Colapinto becomes the first Argentine driver to win an FIA Formula 2 race with a last lap overtake on Paul Aron, as multiple championship contenders fail to finish.

Amaury Cordeel was 10th fastest in Qualifying on Friday afternoon, giving him reverse grid pole position for the Sprint Race. He led the race from the first chicane after a poor start from Colapinto gave him a temporary advantage.

Later in the opening lap, his Hitech Pulse-Eight team mate, Aron took the lead from third on a lap which saw many other cars out of the race.

A big incident in the middle of the field brought out a lengthy Safety Car. Roman Stanek hit the back of Isack Hadjar’s Campos causing him to spin into the pack. He then collected Enzo Fittipaldi who was subsequently hit by the rebranded AIX Racing of Joshua Dürksen.

Also involved was championship contender, Dennis Hauger who took to the grass in attempt to avoid Stanek, but became the fifth retiree with a broken suspension as a result.

Thankfully all five drivers involved reported on their radios that they were okay and got out of their cars safely.

Once the Safety Car came back into the pits, pole-sitter, Cordeel ran wide and into the gravel at the final corner. This gave Colapinto the perfect chance for second position which he took on the start-finish straight one lap later.

Pepe Martí pitted to serve a 10 second stop-go penalty for a starting infringement, dropping him over 40 seconds behind Jak Crawford in 16th.

On Lap 15, Colapinto got within 0.3 seconds of Aron in the lead. Aron mastered the skill of late braking to keep Colapinto at bay for a few laps.

Meanwhile, a battle for the final place of the podium was heating up nicely as championship leader, Zane Maloney began applying pressure to Cordeel, who was looking for his first podium of his F2 career.

Cordeel put up a strong defence but Maloney eventually came out ahead on Lap 23 with a bold move around the outside of the Tamburello chicane with only three laps remaining.

The duel for the lead resumed on Lap 24 and mistake in the final corner would prove costly for Aron and led to a committed overtake in the first corner from Colapinto the win his first race in Formula 2.

Aron came onto the radio to question the legality of the move but the stewards quickly reported there would be no penalty for Colapinto.
