As the FIA Formula 2 season wraps up its testing at Yas Marina, Zane Maloney of Rodin Carlin shares his insights and anticipations for the upcoming 2024 season.
Maloney’s performance during the three-day testing was notable, marking a period of significant growth and understanding of his car. “The three days were really good,” Maloney stated.
He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of testing, where different strategies and tyres are employed, but was pleased with his performance, especially during qualifying runs.
“I feel a lot more confident with the car day by day,” he said, a sentiment bolstered by setting the fastest lap over the three days.
Looking ahead to 2024, Maloney shared his thoughts on the specification change for the FIA Formula 2 car, the first such change since 2018. Although the new car’s appearance is markedly different, Maloney believes the baseline will remain similar.
“It’s not going to be three seconds quicker or three seconds slower,” This perspective highlights the adaptability required in the face of such changes and Maloney’s readiness to embrace them.
Reflecting on his year with Rodin Carlin in 2023, Maloney expressed a positive outlook for the next season. Having never spent more than one year in any championship, he feels uniquely positioned for success.
“It’s good to go into the second year knowing that,” he commented, emphasizing the importance of experience and familiarity.
Despite some challenging rounds this year, he remains focused on reducing mistakes and building on the strong pace he has shown, “Every time I’m in the car I’ve been in the top 5 and I’m confident for next year,”
As for his plans before the season resumes in Bahrain in March 2024, Maloney looks forward to a well-deserved break.
He plans to return to Barbados, his home, to spend time with friends and family, a trip he hasn’t made for more than a few days in the past year. While he jokes about the necessity of training, his intention is clear – to return next year fully prepared for what promises to be a highly competitive season.
With his sights set high, Maloney is ready to face the challenges and opportunities that the new season and the new car will bring.
